# The deadline was not the stopping rule

2. [What changes the branch](#what-changes-the-branch)

In [July](/notes/the-candidate-produced-somewhere-else/) I wrote that if no
title or credible external offer had materialized by the end of 2027, my
hypothesis had failed. The hypothesis was to form an auditable-automation role
from inside regulated reporting, where the work already exists, rather than wait
for a job advertisement that asks for it.

I still think the work may produce the role. I no longer think the date decides
whether to keep doing it.

**Working model.** A deadline tests a forecast about *when* a result will
arrive. The decision to continue a branch depends on what the work has produced,
who has been given authority over it, and whether another route now offers
better evidence or scope. Those are related tests, but I had written them as
one.

## What the date can establish

The July forecast remains on the record. If neither a title nor a credible
external offer exists by the end of 2027, it will have failed as written. I
should not rescue it by moving the date or calling a promising conversation an
offer.

That result would say less about the next action. A reporting transition may
still be producing architecture work, auditable controls, and evidence that can
travel to another institution. A better-paid role with no responsibility for
that problem would not rescue the hypothesis, whatever its title.

## What changes the branch

The internal route has produced the role only if I deliver a concrete proof,
receive named responsibility for the architecture and evidence it requires, and
have that scope recognized in a title or role decision. A mandate without that
recognition would strengthen the case, but leave the claim open. Work without
the mandate is progress on the system, not yet on the career claim.

I should stop expecting the role to form *here* if another team or vendor
receives the architecture and evidence mandate, or if a completed proof is
accepted while the next ownership and role decisions explicitly leave me without
the scope. If a completed proof and a direct request for that decision produce
only repeated deferral, I should treat the internal route as failed too. An
organization can consume the work indefinitely without making a refusal formal.

The broader hypothesis needs revision if comparable institutions consistently
assign the architecture and evidence mandate to vendors rather than forming an
internal role, or if credible hiring conversations do not treat the evidence as
relevant. One rejected application would not establish that. Neither would an
attractive offer for a different kind of work establish success.

I can review the evidence at set intervals, including at the end of 2027,
without making every review an expiry. The next useful test is the first real
allocation of architecture ownership after a demonstrable piece of work. Who
gets the mandate, what proof do they require, and what happens when I show it?
